Program Policies

OUR FACILITY

When no one else in Pagosa could accommodate our program, the owners of Hillside Inn stepped up to graciously host Calm Waters Aquatics swim lessons. Hillside Inn is located at the top of Putt Hill. The address is 2 Solomon Dr., Pagosa Springs.

The pool temperature might be a little low for some of our students. It is 80-82 degrees (2-4 degrees cooler than the Rec Center). The Parenting Water Babies classes cannot be held in water temperature this cold.

There is a hot tub the students can warm up in after their lesson. Every child MUST use the restroom BEFORE they can enter the hot tub., even if they say they “don’t have to go.” This is a soaking tub. It is not a play area. Quiet and respect for the guest users is of utmost importance. 15 min. time limit in the hot tub. Guests have priority. If the hot tub is at full capacity, our students cannot use it.

All facility rules apply to our swim lessons families.

  • Parents may observe and supervise their children during their lesson or class from the pool deck.

  • If you have muddy shoes, please remove them before entering the pool area.

  • You do not need to check in at the front desk. Just come straight back to the pool area.

  • No food or snacks in the pool area. This applies to all family members.

  • The only drink allowed in the pool area is water.

SKILL PROGRESS CHART

Download and print your child’s Skill Progress Chart. Everytime a child completes a set of skills, they earn a sticker to place on the left of that skill section. Keep their charts at home. They will take the sticker with them after class.

Parental Supervision Required

All children must be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times before, during and after class.

Pool Hygiene

Children are expected to use the restroom before AND after class. Swim diapers are required for all children who are not potty trained.

Prior to Lesson

Please have your child wait on deck until their class is called. Children will enter the pool at the steps in the shallow end. They MAY NOT enter the water or sit on the steps before the teacher is ready to call them in.

Swim Suits The popular boys’ suits that hang down low on the leg are not the best for learning to float. They weigh the body down. Choose lightweight fabric and get them as short as possible. Girls can wear one-piece or two-piece suits. Children can wear a snug fitting swim shirt if they like.

Goggles
All children must learn to open their eyes underwater.

This is a HUGE safety skill. If a child falls into a pool unexpectedly and opens their eyes, they can see the wall and reach for it. The majority of children’s pool drownings occur within 2-3’ of the pool edge. We emphasize underwater eye opening. Once a swimmer consistently opens eyes underwater, goggles (not face masks) are strongly encouraged. Skills will advance more quickly when swimmers can see clearly underwater. Calm Waters Aquatics has quality, sanitized goggles available for children to wear during their lesson. Children may wear their own quality goggles.

Hair
Long hair must be tied back or put in a swim cap.

Safety
The pool deck is extremely slick. Please have your children WALK at all times.

Practice
It’s a great idea to spend family time at the pool to practice swim skills as they are learning. Whenever possible, practice without flotation equipment, arm floaties, etc. They are convenient for safety, but inhibit the prone position and give children a false sense that they can float vertically, with head out of the water when they are not wearing them. Practice bubble blowing, breath holding, face in while supported on front, and ears in while supported on back, independent swimming skills for the older children.

Drinking Water
Bring a bottle of water for your child to enjoy during class.
